Every two weeks or so, Mitch Joel, myself, and a few other smart guys get together and do a show called Media Hacks.

In case you haven’t checked it out, we talk about all sorts of awesome internet stuff. Episode #23 just came out, so you should check it out and report back. There will be a test.

Mitch, Hugh, Chris, and I got together last week at the Carnegie Deli in New York to record a Media Hacks episode during O’Reilly’s TOC Conference. You can listen to it here (and subscribe with iTunes here).

Chris, Mitch, and I were on a podcast last week that we hope will become a regular thing. We’re titling it the Media Hacks podcast, because it’s about media, and because we’re hacks because you’ll hopefully get some cool tips out of the recordings we’ll doing.

Here’s the first episode– it included us three this time, but we’ll be adding CC, Chris Penn, and Hugh McGuire as core members in the next episodes. We’d like it to become a kind of Gillmor Gang style thing, with rotating guests, etc. It’s been fun so far, we really hope you tune in. :)

Update: It didn’t take long for the thing to be up before Mitch got a couple of comments about the swearing I do on the show. I have to say, it shocks me every time somebody says something, because I seriously do not notice that this happens, nor did I think it a big deal when I listened again. I hope you find the ability to look past that and into the actual content. Thx.

Anyway, it’s the usual ebook– filled with sales pitches for other ebooks, obvious advice, etc. etc. The majority of it is really just basic “about podcasting” stuff anyone could learn by searching Google (which is likely what he did). Then, on page 64 come the eight pages of groundbreaking monetization tips:

- Advertise stuff
- Advertise your stuff
- Advertise other people’s stuff
- Make people pay for podcasts (!)
- etc.

You get the point. Don’t even ask me why I’m blogging this… if you’ve been to any podcast conferences recently, it isn’t news to you that people are trying to sell us useless stuff. :)

Yeah really, that’s what this episode is about. For real. Inspired by the confessional work of Jonathan Ames, whose stories I find hilarious.

My 150th show, done from the balcony of a hotel room during SXSW 2007. The state and future of the web and of media personalities, my position within the structure, and where I hope to be. It all came out.

This was a great show to do.

So I recorded this show last week that is to be my last ‘studio’ show in two months or so. So it’s rambling BS until that time! I’ll try to put some songs in there too, though, so don’t stress.

I don’t remember much of what I talked about on this show, except for the fact that RoboCop has a hot ass for no reason whatsoever.

My first regular show in about a month. I talk about the Homelessness Marathon, which is going on as I write this, about working through some of my long term goals, and the best t-shirt I have ever owned.

I’ve been reading David B’s massive graphic novel Epileptic, so I felt it was time for me to come out and talk about what having epilepsy means to me.

I have more to say about this, but for now, I just wanted to put it up. Looking forward to your comments.

I don’t think it’s a secret that, over the past several months, my traffic has increased tremendously, and that my income has been increasingly earned online. So I wanted to take advantage of what I have learned to help others build trust, or social currency, online.

Social currency is the raw essence of relationships. In an economy of abundance (aka, a post scarcity economy) such as the web (aka, “there’s always enough to go around”), none of us are playing a zero-sum game; if I send some visitors to you, it doesn’t mean I’m losing traffic, links, or listeners. In fact, it’s often quite the contrary.

The idea that, once you have placed a significant amount of your reputation and resources online, it is no longer necessary for you to deal in real dollars– that dealing in relationships is now the key to your success.

Honestly, this was a very difficult subject to write about, so I ended up having no choice but to record audio to express it, which I suggest you check out (just click the link to download or listen).

So what’s the lesson, what’s the point of this post? As I see it, one thing, and one thing only. I invite you, dear reader, to stop thinking in terms of earnings through your blog or podcast– stop thinking about sponsorships, AdSense, or anything else, and start thinking in terms of relationships. I believe the rest will take care of itself.

So I’ve been harbouring a secret for about six weeks. Not fucking huge, but still, it’s something… so I talk about it at the beginning. Also, how I hate disappointing people, and how the world embracing your screwups on the web.

BTW: Neil has a great post about getting old, and how you don’t necessarily need to lose your connection with a younger generation (although I don’t particularly agree that Bono is still ‘with it’). :)

Oh, and also: This is the pinnacle of openness. I endeavour to be this good.

Woo! I did an oldschool style show. Made evident is my hatred of salespeople, the joke that is minimum wage, and other such things.

Since the update to WordPress 2.0.7 is now done, I can upload this lovely file I created.

This week I ended up walking all around a few Montreal subway stations, chatting to a portable recorder and playing no music aside from recording Peruvian buskers. Don’t hate.

I’m currenty spending way too many hours building a Best of the Daily Source Code. I’ve found files so old, it’s crazy.

And dudes, I totally keep forgetting to put album art in there, sorry. I’ll put it in next time, but this particular episode is already up, so it’s like ‘meh’.
