As of November 21st, eMusic will be changing the number of downloads it offers subscribers. Here are the old amounts:

  • 10$ - 40 downloads
  • 15$ - 65 downloads
  • 20$ - 90 downloads

And the new ones, as of the 21st of this month:

  • 10$ - 30 downloads

If you’re an existing subscriber, you get to keep your old amounts (phew), but for anyone who’s interested, I would really recommend getting in now.

eMusic now #2 for downloads

eMusic’s service has become the second largest in the world, proving once more that independent, DRM-free music is what more music consumers are looking for. eMusic “sells monthly subscriptions, and those numbers have doubled since December, to 200,000. The company averages downloads of 5 million songs monthly,” as USA Today reported Sunday. The free downloads when you start up must be helping, too.

As for me, I’ll be making slight changes to this blog’s layout in the coming few days, adding a bunch of albums into the sidebar that I’ve been feeling recently. I’ve always felt that some of the music I play is under-represented in terms of airplay - I try to play as much of a variety as possible, and rarely play an artist more than two or three times. So this’ll be a way to remedy that and, whenever possible, I’ll try to link to eMusic - I love that they provide an alternative that basically proves the record industry wrong in terms of what can and cannot be done.

Podcast 118 - On wilderness and flowers

My Odeo Channel

While uploading this I was listening to The Hollywood Podcast Unkempt #4. Before you listen to this, go listen to that show, because let me tell you, it is podcasting gold.

This show is about access to wilderness, being stuck in a rut with the content you make, and the tunnel of death by my house.

eMusic review

As of June 1st 2006, eMusic reviews its new promo for signing up, changing it to 25 free downloads, instead of 50. I remember some people even got 100 downloads somehow, back in the day, but no more. If I could bring it back, guys, I would. But it just ain’t happening.

I had a feeling that the number of downloads was going to drop when I got a message about promotion changes in my inbox last month, so I ended up looking around a lot for other music sites that offered good deals. I checked Yahoo Music, Rhapsody, Napster, iTunes, all that stuff. But frankly, I was really unimpressed.

I have never cared for unlimited downloads if I can’t keep the music when I unsubscribe (which I will if you suck), and if my music isn’t in a free format like MP3, I feel like I’m making a bet that the iPod is going to be the device that rules the market until the end of time. Which it will not, by the way.

As for eMusic, I still love the service, the price (25 cents a song or less), and the selection. (Today I picked up Public Enemy, Saint-Etienne, and Magnetic Fields.) And as such, I will continue to put the banner in my sidebar, and I hope you guys will try it out. If you like it, great, and if you didn’t, you basically got two and a half albums for free, so you shouldn’t complain. :) So click here to go get ‘em.

eMusic “Download 50 Free” promotion ending

I just got an email from my affiliate program guys about eMusic, the usual advertiser I place at the top of my sidebar (where the Podcasters Across Borders link is right now). Contained within was this message:

May 2006 is the final month for eMusic’s “50 free downloads” promotion.

In June we will roll out all new creative and a new promotion. We encourage you to take advantage of eMusic’s current offer before it ends. If you have any questions or concerns about the June 1 switch please feel free to contact us.

As anyone that listens to my podcast can tell, I promote eMusic to pretty much everyone I know. I noticed Chris from Indiefeed recently posted about them too; in my opinion, eMusic are the best provider of independent music of all genres on the web today, all available in DRM-free, high-quality MP3 format.

Anyway, so the promo is ending, and who knows what it’ll be replaced with.

Now we know! :) I still highly recommend eMusic however. Try it out - it’s free and gives you 25 free downloads to keep, even if you decide not to keep your account. If you do, let me know how you liked it… and if you need any more information, here’s the eMusic Wikipedia page.
